#Microblog Monday: Musical Relevance.

After years of not listening to only my own music… I recently started listening to a local pop radio station. I tuned in over the Christmas season because they exclusively played christmas carols. And I never really stopped.

I keep listening to the station partly because I’m bored with listening to what’s on my iPhone.

But mostly I started listening to the radio station because I have been feeling like I should know what kind of music is popular right now. Because O is in elementary school and I’d like to be relevant enough to know what he and his friends are listening to.

Until recently, I didn’t think Owen really even LIKED music. He never asked to listen to anything in the car, he never sang to any of the songs we liked, he never seemed to really be listening to the music Jeff and I play.

Until this song came on the radio when O and I were on our way to the store. And all of a sudden, I heard a voice from the backseat.

This is going to be the best day of my life… my li-i-i-i-i-ii-ife!

And my heart grew about 6 sizes to hear him singing.

Turns out, his favorite songs are Katy Perry’s “Roar,” American Authors “Best Day of My Life,” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” And with each one of these songs, he sings along with the radio.

And it makes my heart happy.

This is awesome! My husband is a musician, and I was a music major (briefly… until I realized that I really didn’t want a career in music), so music is a huge part of our lives. My daughter is obsessed with Katy Perry. We let her stay up last night to watch the Super Bowl half time show and she kept yelling, “that’s Katy Perry!!!” So cute.

All about that bass?? That must be hilarious to watch!

We listen to kids’ songs in the car, and sometimes I don’t change the station after I drop everyone off.

My two year old was so excited to hear something that mommy sings on the radio. She commanded me to sing along. It was fun.

We also just started listening to the radio. Or, rather, the kids have always listened (somehow?) and I haven’t. But they have been teaching me about different musicians such as Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars. I can even sing along now.

    *love*. šŸ™‚

My daughter loves to sing, too … and can’t hold a tune to save her life, but I find it incredibly endearing, because she takes so much pleasure in it, and often asks us to sing along.

    Enjoy the music!
